Warning

In addition to the known bug in ZSNES and SNES9x that cause Der Langrisser to periodically lock up and crash, mil from the Fantasy Anime forums has verified that the bug also occurs in SNEeSe. Therefore, we do not recommend playing Der Langrisser in SNEeSe, either.

This leaves bsnes and SNESGT as the only verified emulators capable of playing Der Langrisser correctly. As an aside, Super Sleuth is completely unverified, and lacks both sound support and speed throttling, but may still work if you’re willing to play that way.

I use zsneswv1.36 and I had no crashes or any strange bug for hours, even if I fast forwarded it for few minutes. Perhaps that will work.

And yes, I tested it on the 1.01 patch.

  2. Anonymous Says:

BTW fantastic work with the translation.

  3. MaDMaLKaV Says:

SNES9X 1.51 for MAc doesn’t seem to have the problem, or at least I was unable to produce it during the tesitng.

If you have stereo sound support off, it shouldn’t crash (well, we haven’t seen it crash yet at least). Otherwise, no. I’ve used 1.36 personally while working on Der Langrisser. The bug goes way, way, way back. Trust me.

  5. Samuli Says:

Hmm, maybe Byuu has hacked der langrisser rom so that it plays well only on his bsnes emulator.. Just kidding. =D I don’t like bsnes ‘cos the sound stutters if I put the ntsc video mode on plus I don’t know how to use save states in bsnes.. damn..

  6. Jesse Says:

I think there are no save states in bsnes.
Bsnes works fine, if your PC is fast enough.

… or you could try the original Japanese ROM, and see that the exact same thing happens there.

And I don’t care that you don’t like bsnes because your computer is too slow to run it at full speed. If I make bsnes faster for you, then it will just be ZSNES with less features and the same bugs. In other words, what’s the point?

Nope, no savestates. Though I’m puzzled as to why people need them in Der Langrisser as you can quick save at any time in-game. Let me guess: people want savestates so they can manipulate luck by attacking the same enemy again and again until they get favorable conditions, so they can then post about how ridiculously easy DL is (with their seven Devil Axes and five Masayan Swords), right? ;)

  8. woodeye Says:

The only thing why I’m not using bsnes with DL yet is that you can’t tune NTSC filter settings in same manner as in ZSNES - presets and advanced settings (or I haven’t figured out how).

The NTSC filter in bsnes as default is way too “composite” for my taste.
In ZSNES, after tuning the NTSC filter settings I got the visual side just the way I wanted.

Samuli, I’ve had enough of your shit here. You have no tact nor appreciation for the hard work of others. You go out of your way to be an ass about shit which you clearly know nothing about. You are no longer welcome here. Come back, and I promise you will not like my retaliation.

woodeye, my apologies. I’ve been meaning to work on this feature for a while now. Thanks for the input.

  10. Cipzor Says:

Yo… I’m playing the patched version on the emulator Snes9k (Snes9x with kaillera support).. I’m in the 6th stage, using frame skip, and therefore had no crashes like in the zsnes/snes9x. (stereo sound is enabled)
    :)

ps: sry for my poor englsh :T

Im not sure if this the right place but the patcher is not working for me. I renamed the rom , tryed both versions of the rom , and even tryed LANGFAND00D “translation” but the patcher said “dl_j.smc found”. There all in the same folder named the exact way its supposed to be so i have no idea whats going on. I’ve heard this was a great game and was hoping to play in English. If byuu you could be so kind as to provide the ISP patch it would be very appreciated. Anyway if anyone can help please do so. I’ll be checking back here later.

  12. Eric H. Krieger Says:

The EXE included with the patch is an auto-patcher utility. Just follow the instructions in the readme and it should work. I am under the impression that soft-patching (unpatched rom and the renamed patch both in one dir under znsnes, et al) will NOT function correctly. You need to prepatch it, as there *is* no IPS patch, it’s in NINJA format, I believe.

  13. Monoman Says:

Byuu i’m wondering if you would consider adding key binds the the speed regulator to allow for quick switching between emu speeds. Amazing work getting such an accurate emu and thanks for sticking around the scene.

  14. Flunky Says:

I’m having the same problem as Anonymous. I’m not sure what operating system he’s using, but I’ve tried downloading it separately on two different powerpc macs and an intel mac. Each time I get the “dl_j.smc not found” error, despite the fact that I’ve followed the directions (rom is in the same folder and is renamed to dl_j.smc). I really want to enjoy this translation, but the patcher doesn’t seem to be working for some reason.

  15. byuu Says:

Monoman, yes, but it would take me some time to add.

Anonymous and Flunky, try using the program from the command-line. It also accepts arguments, so you can run it as:
    patch “/exact/path/to/dl_j.smc” “/exact/path/to/dl_e.smc”

The only reason it won’t be able to find it is if you somehow run the program with a different working directory than where the executable is located. Usually you can only do that by dragging things on top of the EXE in Windows, or making a shortcut launcher and asking it to start up with a different path.

  16. Senka Says:

Hm.. one possibility is that they have Show File Extensions under Folder Options unchecked. So by renaming it the way they are, the true filename may be coming out as “dl_j.smc.smc”

  17. Flunky Says:

I don’t have the extensions set to hidden, so I don’t think it’s that. Tried clipping off the .smc anyways just in case, gave the same “dl_j.smc not found” error.

The files should be in the same directory. When I tried running it with the command “/path/patch /path/dl_j.smc /path/dl_e.smc” (this could certainly be wrong, I’m not experienced with using Terminal) it would give the error “patch.bin not found”. Again, this is with ‘patch’, ‘patch.bin’, and ‘dl_j.smc’ all in the same folder. Got another person to download the patch and rom on their G5 tower and see if it worked; they got the same error (dl_j.smc not found).

  18. Jack Van Burace Says:

I’m not sure how it happened, but after the Langrisser sword gets powered up, is it given back to you right then? Because somehow, I don’t seem to have it in my inventory and I’m late in the game (I think) at scenario 20 on the good guy path. At least, I think it’s the good guy path - we’re fighting against the Empire and the revival of the evil sword with the Langrisser…

  19. Jack Van Burace Says:

Hate to double post, but I thought I should maybe say a little more so it would be possible to tell if it was my fault or not. I think I had regular Langrisser on a party member that left at one point (trying not to spoil anything here) and I’m not sure if I ever checked to see if I had it then. It only really matters if I need to be wielding the super Langrisser to eventually win the game. No matter what I probably caused this to happen somehow by messing up, though - I doubt it’s a bug…

I think we’re on the Light path, as the guides on GameFAQs call it, not Independant.

  20. Derrick Says:

Jack: Unless you end up in a scenario where you have to fight Chaos, then the game is beatable without Langrisser.

erik: The patch is a totally unique format made just for this game. It is not in any way related to NINJA, despite my earlier announcement.

  21. Garro Sakuragi Says:

Jack Van Burace: I think I know what happened… In the scenario when you have to get the Holy Rod and you fight against Rohga, when you kill the enemy with the Holy Rod, the commander that did the killing equips the Holy Rod automatically and loses the weapon he was using at the moment FOREVER, even the Langrisser… So, it’s gone…

  22. XxDayofFatexX Says:

I finished the Chaos/Dark side of the game and desided to work on doing the Light side.

I entered the 2? (Secret Level 2 for Light Side only) and somehow Rohga reentered my party for the fight. He leaves your group in the Light side yet he is in this battle.

    He even has 2 speeches

    Rohga: “What?”
Rohga: “I guess we should attack everyone … “

  23. gobstober Says:

if possible can anyone tell me a website to get the der langrisser j rom becuse all i find is the V1.0

  24. Shane Killian Says:

I can’t tell you that, but I can say that if you find the right path, the answer will pierce through the clouds.

  25. Garro Sakuragi Says:

Oook… I don’t know why that post is empty… Anyway, just look for the rom on Clouds of El Sallia… The link is to the right on this page… Look for it…

  26. Kiru Says:

The patched game works fine with “Snes9xpp SE’ Windows v1.37c”
I think this is a slightly different build than the normal ones, but I’m not certain.
However all games which should have problems with snes9x worked for me with the one above mentioned without causing any problems.

I’m in chapter 9 and nothing has crashed so far… (no other problems as well), I hope this helps a bit :)

  28. Tajomaru Says:

This is probably too little, too late to address Flunky’s problem, but in case anyone else on a mac is having the dl_j.smc not found issue (which I recreated on both PPC and Intel macs - using the correct installer in all cases), the solution I found through brute force trial and error (I’m still not really a mac person, but that’s what my boss gives me, so that’s what I use) is to go to Terminal and type “/whatever/path/patch” (no quotes), and not specifying the input or output files.

Even though I had tried it at the command line specifying paths for the input and output files, I was still getting a variety of errors, despite the files all being in the same happy little directory. Since I’ve no understanding of why it didn’t work before or why it decided to start working, your mileage may vary considerably, but you’re all welcome to the fruit of my frustrations.

Great work and many thanks to all who contributed to this project (you know who you are), and Derrick, I’m actually going to be flying out to live in Beijing in two days (as terrifying as that is), so if you happen to see a 26 year old white guy wandering around in a daze, you may well have stumbled across someone who’s enjoying what you’ve put so much time and effort in to.

  29. Flunky Says:

I’ve tried that before and just tried it again, to no avail. Haven’t found a way to make it work yet on any intel or ppc macs I’ve tried. Annoying to not be able to enjoy the patch, but, as they say, ’so it goes’.

  30. Tajomaru Says:

Okay, I got home and tried it again and it didn’t work… but it did when I first changed directories to the /whatever/path/ and then explicitly ran the patch by the full /whatever/path/patch method. Maybe that’s what’s missing for you too? I think what we need are some real Mac heads ;) Anyway, good luck, Flunky!

  31. Flunky Says:

Yes, that did indeed work! Thanks a bunch for the help, Tajomaru.

  32. Deifier Says:

could someone please put up an ftp or other type of link with the patched version of the game since the macintosh version of the patch doesn’t work in terminal tired both ppc and intel. :(

Get the same errors like the rest of the guys with macintosh.

Hope they fix that patch soon or someone posts a link for good ol sake’

  33. MR_Soren Says:

I got the mac patcher to work like this:

    cd path/to/directory
    ./name_of_executable

  34. Michael Says:

Hi, I read about the recent finalization of the translation and I just want to say to Byuu and everyone else involved, THANK YOU!! I have loved the game since I spotted it and now I can finally actually play it with the Translation patch. However, I’ve been sitting at my computer for like two hours trying to figure out how to get the patch and rom to work together, but I cannot get it to do so. I am very inexperienced in these things so I am pretty sure it is my fault. I have followed the directions I believe but simply am not getting something. I am working on Windows Vista if that makes a difference. I don’t understand how to write the direct paths that are mentioned, any chance someone has something I can copy exactly to get the right sequence? Thanks, hope to hear from anybody soon!
