Why I want a Friday release
A couple people asked me why I’m so hellbent on getting this patch out on Friday.
Here’s why.
Friday will be almost 10 years to the date I first got involved in the translation “scene.” Of course, at the time, the scene was basically me, Dae Pavlisak and David Timko yelling at each other over who stole what from our Final Fantasy V patches Today, we are seven days away from when Timko and I finally got over it and started working together.
A Friday release will be one month to the day that we formed RPGe.
This means that getting this patch out on Friday will really be just about the 10-year anniversary of when everything began. It was before all the groups formed, before Toma did his Sumo patch, and when the only people around were the then-dormant Demi and SoM2Freak, the long-gone Quatch and Lord Pinto and the rather silent Sydra who was translating FirePro wrestling games.
In other words, it’s a good day to duck back out after dedicating precisely two-fifths of my life to this work — granted I started in December 1996, but there was no serious work until May 1997, and from June on was when this became so important to me.
So … it’s not as arbitrary of a date as previously suspected.

Just please don’t throw the quality away to make a release date. We’ve delayed for four fucking years to make sure every last menu item was justified and positioned for maximum readability. I’d hate to ruin it last minute because we want it out on the 8th no matter what — and believe me, I want the game finished just as badly as you.
If you’re sure it will be fine, and you’re ok with working on a v1.01 patch, then that’s fine. Beta testing will never, ever catch all flaws in the script, so a v1.01 is inevitable with a game like this, sadly …

I’ve really run out of anything more I can do on my own. I am not going to play the game 20 times through checking all the dialogue — that’s what the beta testers wee for. If they didn’t catch it, then hopefully end players won’t.
I know a 1.01 patch is inevitable too. Not having the names just made the script a huge fucking mess to work on. Like you said, it’s amazing it came out as well as it did.
I’m doing my best on the game’s manual right now. It won’t be as good as the original manual, but I don’t have the time or desire to make one that good anyways. It will be better than any other fan translation’s manual — that I can promise. I hope you will be able to take a look at it before release. It really needs someone to check over the spelling besides me.
The only thing I feel is being rushed is the actual patching format. Unless you want to work out the EXE thing we talked about, there is relatively little I can do about that to. I could make a one-way patcher using PHP Blender if you think that is OK, but it would still be a bit of a bitch since end users would need GTK installed, and Windows people don’t have that.
Since those are our only options, it looks like NINJA it is for the 1.0, and then maybe we can release a 1.01 in September in our new format. I think giving people the summer to report things with it in the wild should be good enough.
Agree?

Well… I wasn’t reading the posts of this project from the beginning… but why don’t you realease the ROM already patched?
Sorry if I said anything noob or something like this. ^^
Cheers =)

Because that would mean even more jail time?

Do You really think that NCS gives a crap if you share their 12 years old game?.. I don’t think, but better not take any necessary risks.. =D unless you have a shit loads of money. By the way, no need to hurry releasing the translation because I just got a new job and I don’t have time to play now.. =D

Well, shit D. There you go. Samuli won’t even be able to play it. Now we have no other reason to rush the release, right? How much longer do you think it’ll be until you’re available to play it, Samuli? That way I can get a rough estimate of how much additional work we can get done in that timespan.

Hey Byuu, i’ll be glad to beta test for ya. :p
Just want to say great job guys, thanks for sharing your time and talents.
I personally think that a 1.0 patch in Ninja isn’t a bad idea. Think of it as a public beta; when the new 1.01 patch and format are released after fixing some small typos and whatever else, that would make it the ultimate release right? A wonderful new format with an amazing translation.
Whatever you do decide to do, i’m sure everything will go well and people will be stunned by the amount and quality you guys put into this, thanks.
