Poll: Please tell us what you think
I’ve noticed that during Tyson’s edits, all the monster shouts that were originally written in Latin characters have now been changed to standard issue howls and groans.
This means the infamous “WAOOOOOOOON!” is now something like “Awoooo!” and all the lines like “GYOGYOOOO!” have been rewritten entirely.
Would you prefer the way Tyson has it now? Or would you like to see it reverted to how it was before? Or if you don’t support complete reversion … do you at least want to see the return of WAOOOOOOOON?
Let us know.

I liked the original ones.

I think I like the WAOOOOOOOON. “Awoooo!” sounds like a wolf-wanna-be lol… I wonder if the other monsters were supposed to have their unique sound effects when they die (like how a slime or a phoenix or a scylla or a succubus dies) and if that has been rewritten. So… I’d like to see the original version. I’m sure the monster fonts now would give life to the original monster shouts and it’ll be a waste I think to replace them

I happen to prefer the WAOOOOOOOOOOOOON-type cries, as well. I’m all for the originals.

I”ll wait for some more comments before actually doing any major replacements. It’ll be a little bit annoying but it’s not too hard to fix.
The wear wolves and gelgazers did have their own death screams. The ghosts did too. I think they were like BYUBOOOO or something like that. gelgazers are all GYOGYOOOO or BUSHUUUU.
Honestly, I thought they looked good int he monster font too, especially when you only upper-case the first letter. I was kind of surprised when I got the scripts back and they were all changed.

Me like WAOOOOOOOON! Only 8 days to go! Beibe beibeeeeeeeee!!!
May 31st, 2007 at 11:00 am
I like WAOOON too. And completely support the idea of strange-sounding monster death cries in creepy font.
May 31st, 2007 at 12:02 pm
WAOOOOON sounds more original don’t you think?
May 31st, 2007 at 12:35 pm
I prefer the original ones with the monster font…

I know it’s a bit late, since I just got my beta patch, but I must say that I’m quite impressed.
I think the whole “WAOOOON” thing sounds a bit more…I dunno, monsterly, to me.

Keeping the original ones retains a sense of uniqueness that I’d love this game to have. This kind of fan-translation doesn’t deserve generic stuff, and I loved the screenshots depicting what you’re talking about.
So I vote for complete original.

Ya, i like the WAOOOOON better
May 31st, 2007 at 6:05 pm
I don’t know about the font, but I prefer the original WAOOOOOON stuff.
May 31st, 2007 at 6:51 pm
This IS a translation, so you should _translate_.
GYOGYOOOO! makes sense to a japanese, but not a non-japanese.
Although Waoooooon would be understood, Awooooo is a more correct translation, and, to us, it sound to us pretty much the same as waoooon does to a japanese (i assume. I’m no expert on japanese …yet). Waooon does sound cooler and all, but it’s not supposed to.

Part of the problem with them is they are all totally made up noises. This isn’t as simple as translating the Japanese “nyao nyao” to “Meow meow” or “wan wan” to “woof woof”
We don’t exactly have sounds in English for what a big pile of Gel screams when it attacks you. Whatever it screams, I am sure it must be something better than Grooooooooooan or Uuuuuuuuuuuugh, like we have now. Though you are right, Gyogyoooo doesn’t really make any sense from an English reader’s view.
So then, would any translation authority like to tell me what sounds gels, werewolves, sea serpents, dragons, minotaurs, rocs, phoenixes, ghosts, krakens, dinosaurs and golems say in English?

“You sank my Battleship!”
BUSHUUUUU makes perfect sense for a Gel to me, sounds like it’s dissolving. Either that or “I’m meltiiiiing! I’m meltiiiing!”

Vote for WAOOOOOON

I’d go for the “I’M MEEEELTIIINNGGGG!” or perhaps a HISSSS?
Or Pinky’s “NARF!”.

Are You serious? Then I would go “miauuuuu” for werewolves. Those creatures are all fictional so they relly don’t speak english or japanese, just monster.. =D
June 1st, 2007 at 3:32 am
Ok… Now the whole issue became ridiculous…
June 1st, 2007 at 6:16 am
OK.
In lieu of how close we are to the actual release date and my unwillingness to delay the game just over fucking monster screams, they are staying as they are now.
Who knows, though. Maybe Wear Wolves will sneak into the final patch …
June 1st, 2007 at 3:41 pm
Lol… Wear Wolves… Rocks… Minitaurs… Crackers… Just go ahead and do it… :P…
June 1st, 2007 at 4:24 pm
I prefer the originals..
June 1st, 2007 at 10:03 pm
A Gel makes the sound “Glurp” or maybe “bluurrrb blub shlomp glubb” when attacking… (that’s “glubb’ with two b’s)
June 2nd, 2007 at 12:18 am
What’s with people calling them wear wolves? It’s werewolf/werewolves lol. Unless these particular wolves wear clothes?
Also, ignoring the mispelling of minotaurs in Garro’s comment, what does he mean by crackers? o.O
June 2nd, 2007 at 12:28 am
I was just trying to play with the monsters’ names… Like Wearwolves, Rocks, Minitaurs… That was supposed to be a joke… A pretty lame one, but a joke nonetheless… And with Crackers I tried to play with the word Krakens… Again, bad joke :P…
June 2nd, 2007 at 3:38 am
If I happen to find any wear wolves when I play the game I’m gonna cut Your balls off and feed them to polar bears.. Better to believe it.. =D

Oh. Pun-based humor is lost on me many times. It results in a sad life.
June 2nd, 2007 at 8:30 am
Does anyone have Cless’s fan art from the Dear Lanigrasser translation? He did this beautiful sock-puppet like wearwolf drawin in paint that just said, “WAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON! –THE WEAR WOLF”
June 2nd, 2007 at 1:10 pm
Nope. There’s no such thing on the whole internet..
June 2nd, 2007 at 2:41 pm
Waooon is too strange. Awooo is more normal and wolfy so leave it.
June 3rd, 2007 at 8:27 am
WAOOOOON!!! That actually sounds more wolfy like then Awoo anyway.., but if it’s to much work I don’t think it would make that big of a difference to all of us who are just excited to see the translation finally coming to completion. Thank you guys!
June 3rd, 2007 at 8:40 am
The demon sword Al hazard.. =D Lol..
June 3rd, 2007 at 12:20 pm
Personally, i prefer the originals. I can see the sense of using more a realistic interpretation of ’sounds’, but then again; what is realistic? I think you have to weigh up nostalgia (the originals like “WAOOOOOON!!”, “BUSHUUUUU”, which to purely neutral, english speaking individuals, will seem rather strange) with realism. How is that accomplished? im not sure. At the end of the day it comes down to peoples own interpretation of the game.
That said, the decision should be formed through the opinions of the playsters. Like of course; D has done. Its clear to see that the originals are preferred over the ones in place now…
Just my thoughts.
Whatever you choose; thanks for putting the hard work in to translate it all
June 4th, 2007 at 12:27 am
Well, as I said before, I said I prefer the original ones… HOWEVER, if getting them means a delay on the release date or unnecesary work for D (who already has a lot to do), I think I can live without them :P…

I really have to agree with Garro Sakuragi’s last comment here.
